The McAvoy Group through an open competitive tender process were awarded the design and build contract to extend and upgrade the facilities at City of Derry Airport by Derry City Council
The Requirement
In the last 5 years passenger numbers have doubled at City of Derry airport. To meet the continued increase in demand, the airport had a requirement for extending and upgrading the arrivals area and the creation of a new business lounge. The new facility has allowed the airport to double capacity.
The McAvoy Solution
The contract for the design, construction and fitting out of the arrivals block and business lounge was awarded to the McAvoy Group.
21 steel-framed modules were manufactured off-site in McAvoy's premises and delivered to the airport by road where they were craned into position ready for final fitting out.
The total program time of 18 weeks from order to handover ensured that a swift solution was presented to the client.
750 sqm of additional space has been provided in two new buildings. Block A provides a new international arrivals lounge with baggage handling facilities, passport & border control facilities and new washroom facilities.
Block B provides a new business lounge and retail units, in addition the existing washroom facilities were removed and replaced with new facilities.
Whilst on site the McAvoy team completed an internal remodelling of the existing structure and finishes and completely upgraded the fire and security systems including the PA system ensuring full compliance to new regulations.
All Civil engineering works including an extension to the airport apron were carried out airside whilst ensuring no disruption or delay to any airport services.
